ABOUT ABOUT

Join us in the Phillips Hall Theatre on September 23rd for the world premiere of ERABUS AND THE FALL OF SPARROWS. Every dollar spent will go to support the Santa Ana College Theatre Arts Department, its programs and students.  There will be a reception prior to the performance at 6:00pm in the Arts Building, Building C.  Please see our social media platforms for any further updates.

ERABUS is the ancient Greek word for darkness. In Shakespeare's great tragedy, HAMLET, the hero character, when faced with the possibility of his own death, tells his friend Horatio: "There is providence in the fall of a sparrow", meaning, there is dignity in the death of the smallest creature.

As part of the SAC-OCSA dual enrollment program and in conjunction with OCSA high school students, award-winning playwright and SAC faculty member, William Mittler writes this thought provoking and heartbreaking original piece. Knowing that there are few great works available for this important age group to perform, faculty and students set out on a journey to develop a topical and meaningful piece that could resonate with high school students around the country. Utilizing student improvisation and exercises, this devised piece has taken shape and found its form. Under the direction of John Walcutt, Mittler’s masterpiece is brought to life with the student voice taking center stage. The creators‘ hopes are that this play will speak to and move audiences, having a future life (until the subject matter hopefully no longer matters) in high schools and colleges around the country.

There will be a brief talkback with the cast, director and playwright after the show. Your feedback as an audience member is invaluable to the continued development of this piece, as we continue to workshop it until it is ready for publishing.

There are comedic moments, but the play does contain mature subject matters: teen isolation, suicide, and school shootings. Though no violence or blood will be represented onstage, audience members of 12 and older are recommended.

Donation minimum $5.  A $10 ticket donation will receive a complimentary gift.

*Tickets will also be available for donation purchase at the door with cash, check or credit card.

**Checks at the door should be made out to SAC Foundation with Friends of the Theatre in the memo line.
